Closing the week with another quote from the Childhood ReCollections interviews, this time from the architect of the Roca London Gallery itself! “Baghdad used to be a very cosmopolitan place; at the time of my childhood it was undergoing a Modernist influence. … My parents instilled in me a passion for discovery, and they never made a distinction between science and creativity.” – Zaha Hadid #architectureexhibition #zahahadid #zahahadidarchitects #architecture #quotes #architecturequotes #architect #waltergropius #memoryindesign Images: Heydar Aliyev Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan, 2007-2012, photo by Iwan Baan courtesy of Zaha Hadid Architects Heydar Aliyev Centre, Baku, Azerbaijan, 2007-2012, photo by Helene Binet courtesy of Zaha Hadid Architects Walter Gropius, design for Baghdad, 1957-58

#4 Tatiana Bilbao

@tabilbaoestudio #tatianabilbao #mexicanarchitecture #mexico #monterrey #dreamhouses #beton #concreto #concretearchitecture #vernacular #primitivism #brutalist #brutgroup #brutarchitecture #contrast #mexicandesign #mexicanhouse #cliffarchitecture #cliff #paysage #landscape #falaise #iconicalarchitecture #confinement #imaginaire #labiennale #venise #venezia #centrepompidou #archilovers

#6 Lina Bo Bardi

Lina Bo Bardi 3. The underlying objective for Bo Bardi’s first major commission, São Paulo’s Museum of Art on Avenida Paulista, was summarised in three words: “not beauty – freedom”. The commission came from her partner Pietro Maria Bardi, who was appointed as the museum's founding director in 1946. The museum's construction began in 1964, only to be halted for two years due to Brazil's military coup in 1964, and eventually completed in 1968. Bo Bardi intended it to become a landmark that seem to be open and accessible to São Paulo's public, particularly those who were typically intimidated by museums. And accessible it was. One could view into the museum through the giant glass box, as well ass immediately access it's underbelly, which became a sheltered public space that could host a concert on one day, and a market the next. Together with its red, muscular structure, the museum gained icon status thanks to the spectacle of the paintings appearing to float in the gallery space became. The freestanding glass easels with heavy concrete bases demystified the collection, presenting artwork in freely, and in a way no museum of its stature had ever done before. . . . . #LinaBoBardi #theatredesign #design #architecture #setdesign #museudeartesaopaulo #masp #saopaulo #avenidapaulista #arte #saopaulocity #sampa #sp #arquitectura #masp #modernismo #modernism #braziliandesign #anos #lina #modernismobrasileiro #brazilianmodernism #sp #o #arte #sescpompeia #designbrasileiro #archilovers #architecturephotography #brazilianarchitecture

Anne Tyng’s house- a Philadelphia row house remodeled (and reimagined) by the architect during the 1960s. The house is Tyng’s only existing solo project and is perhaps the best expression of her own architectural vision. #12 Louise Blanchard Bethune

Cool is Everywhere Out Takes 2 – Hotel @The Lafayette was designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, one of America’s first women architects, in 1904. The hotel was added on to in the 1920s and updated in the 1940s. Evidence of these design changes is on view in the lobby, taproom, restaurant, and ballroom. When it was renovated in 2012 by developer Rocco Termini, the hotel led the revitalization of downtown Buffalo. Hotel @ the Lafayette has 57 rooms, along with apartments upstairs, and restaurants and a hip coffee shop, Public Espresso, on the street level. #cooliseverywherebook #hotelatthelafayette #revitalization #louiseblanchardbethune #interiordesign #buffalo #buffalony @abramsbooks @roccotermini @bcampagna39

#14 Charlotte Perriand

Inventing a New World. edited by Jacques Barsac, Sebastien Cherruet, Pernette Perriand Gallimard 2019 Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) was a pioneer of modern design in France during the twentieth century. Her avant-garde vision was expressed in color, organic forms, and streamlined functionality, elements which are still at the heart of contemporary design today. Her furnishings were created from aluminum, rubber, chrome, leather, bamboo, and above all, wood; their appeal is timeless. This lavishly illustrated book, accompanying a major retrospective at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, explores how much in the vanguard she was in her use of materials, in her social and political awareness, and in her collaborations with artists, architects, and other designers. The show presents a global vision of her creativity, talent, and inventiveness, exploring her commitment to women and to a humanist design ethos that took into account the middle and working classes with an emphasis on rationalizing costs and space. This book, with essays by an international roster of art, architecture, and design historians, offers a plurality of perspectives and explores Perriand's creative legacy through the 20th century and beyond. #charlotteperriand #perriand #inventinganewworld #lacascade #arc1600

#16 Norma Merrick Sklarek

View this post on Instagram

With @prp3_2019 happening in LA this week, we’re thinking about Norma Merrick Sklarek, who was the first licensed black woman architect in California. In 1980 she was the project director for the new Terminal One at LAX which included renovation of the iconic Theme Building. Despite facing challenges because of her race and gender, Sklarek achieved many other “firsts.” Learn more about her trailblazing life and work through the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation’s Pioneering Women in Architecture website: https://pioneeringwomen.bwaf.org/norma-merrick-sklarek/ @bwaf.nyc Image 1: Theme Building at LAX 2: Commons-Courthouse Center, Columbus, IN, 1973 3: The U.S. Embassy, Tokyo, Japan, 1976 4: Norma Sklarek All photos © Gruen Associates #womenshistorymonth #architecture #la #lax #themebuilding #prp3 #prp3_2019 #recentpast #modernism #normamerricksklarek #normasklarek #aia #architect #architecturalhistory #latemodernism
